About The Self-Help Center
Where We Are
The Civil Law Self-Help Center is located on the first floor of the Regional Justice Center at 200 Lewis Avenue in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada. The center is open Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Fridays (except court holidays).
Who We Are
The Civil Law Self-Help Center opened in December 2009. Its mission is to increase informed access to the legal system by providing education, information, legal forms, community referrals, and other support services to self-represented parties with civil matters in Clark County, Nevada, regardless of income, assets, or citizenship. The center was developed through a partnership between the courts in Clark County, Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, and the Clark County Neighborhood Justice Center (a free mediation service provided by Clark County). The center is operated and staffed through a contract with Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada.
What We Do (And Don't Do)
Among other things, the center can:
- Provide legal information to self-represented litigants regarding court rules, court procedure, and various civil legal topics;
- Assist with the identification of legal forms that suit a litigant's situation;
- Verify that forms are complete;
- Refer parties to other legal and non-legal community resources; and
- Provide forms and information via its website on such topics as mediation, small claims actions, landlord-tenant disputes, protection orders, and how to represent one's self in court, among other things.
CLSHC staff is prohibited from providing legal advice. The staff cannot tell you:
- whether or not you should sue someone;
- recommend a specific attorney or law firm;
- give you an opinion about your case or predict how a judge might rule;
- talk to a judge on your behalf; or
- tell you what words to use in your court papers or at a court hearing.
The staff at the Self-Help Center is also obligated to remain neutral. There is no attorney-client privilege or confidentiality of any information shared by a visitor at the center.
